The night's performances had a definite Southern feel. When people weren't sheltered under their umbrellas, there was a lot of dancing going on, especially when Theodis Ealey and Buckwheat Zydeco were playing. Theodis played a good mix of his material including "Stand Up In It", "Move With the Motion", and "Francine", along with some well-done covers that really showcased his guitar skills like "Hey Joe". He also managed to squeeze in a little bit of the song "Bo Diddley" to recognize the song's namesake composer who passed away last week.

If I have any complaint about some of the Southern Soul recordings of Theodis, it's that they really don't showcase his guitar skills enough. He really is a fine blues guitarist, and I'm glad I got a chance to see him perform.

Nice notes: I can't agree with my brother Gary on that last thought, but when do brothers ever agree? I love the fact that Theodis restricts any guitar indulgences which are fine in concert on the recorded work he and co-producer Bruce Billups concoct.

Ichiban Records, a respected blues label in Atlanta, recognized Theodis' multiple talents and immediately signed him to a deal in Over the next six years, Theodis and Ichiban Records would enjoy 4 very successful albums.

It was Theodis Ealey's charm and magnetism that attracted audiences worldwide. His electrifying stage performances also opened doors to Hollywood. The "Bluesman Lover" created lemonade out of lemons when Ichiban Records eventually closed its doors. At his new label home, Theodis released his fifth project called "It's A Real Good Thang," continuing with the Ealey tradition of music diversity filled with pure soul. Theodis thought this song and album was just for "grown folks" but the radio industry and listeners thought otherwise.

Ealey was one of 11 children raised in his family. It was the practical thing to do for an education because it was the closest high school available for children of color. Throughout the majority of his childhood in the Jim Crow South, Ealey grew up safe in the belly of his family and immune to the overt racism that existed around him. But he joined the Air Force as soon as he could after graduation at age 17 after experiencing multiple incidents of prejudice while working as a shipping-and-receiving clerk at a high-end department store during the break after his junior year.

It was — less than a year after a federal lawsuit forced the University of Mississippi to integrate and also a year prior to the Civil Rights Act being signed into law — and demonstrations and violence were the order of the day across the South. The bright spot was that he was given the opportunity to choose from three possible places for assignment, and he chose Hawaii. His entire outlook on the world and his place in it changed dramatically during the six years he spent there.
